Between the nineteen peaks of the Cangshan Mountains, eighteen streams carve their way downward, flowing year-round into Erhai Lake. Each bears its own name—Xiaxi, Wanhua, Yangxi, Mangyong, Jinxi, Lingquan—marking the folds of the mountain range with distinct rhythms, temperatures, and tales. In spring, petals drift on the current; after summer rains, the streams swell over rocky shoals; autumn leaves mirror themselves in clear pools; winter snowmelt feeds the gentle flow. These waters nourish Bai villages and fertile farmlands along their banks, forming the very backbone of Dali’s landscape—where mountains and water embrace. For centuries, the eighteen streams have sustained daily life: irrigation, millstones grinding rice, and the quiet hum of water shaping the land. They are also the living brushstrokes in the timeless ink painting that is Cangshan. Walk beside one, listen to its murmur, and you will understand half of Dali.
